Campbell-Sevey Insight: Dan Hamman – Bluegrass Handyman
When you've spent more than a decade managing the shipping of thousands of steam parts and boiler systems, you develop some unique interests to unwind. For Dan Hamman it's home improvement projects and guitar picking.
Dan is the Logistics Manager at Campbell-Sevey and for the past 16 years he has coordinated the storage, transport, and delivery of our products. We've grown a lot during that time, but Dan enjoys the challenge of planning ahead and dealing with the unexpected. To him that's part of the fun. So is pursuing his other interests.
"I have a passion for all things home improvement.” said Dan. "Ten years ago, my good friend and neighbor, Mike, and I, built a super garage adjacent to my house. Today it is my workshop, music studio, and party pavilion." Using information that he learned at Campbell-Sevey, Dan also put in a heated floor system. "My dog loves that!"
Several years ago Dan decided to take guitar lessons at a local community center. "My instructor, Ryan, taught me to play with a pick, called 'flatpicking', and many other cool tricks." said Dan. He plays a Bluegrass-style of flatpicking known as Carter-style picking.
Carter-style picking is a technique named after Maybelle Carter of the Carter Family. She was the first recording artist to popularize it. To play Carter-style, you play the melody on the bass strings with the thumb while the fingers provide the rhythm notes on the treble strings. What makes this style significant is that the guitar performs as a lead instrument and rhythm instrument at the same time.
Here is a clip of an original song Dan created played in Carter-style on his guitar. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoy having Dan as part of the Campbell-Sevey team.
